Godfrey's Cottage was located opposite the crossroads in Walmington-on-Sea and was used as a strategic defense post for a Home Guard machine gun unit in the event of a German coastal invasion through the town.[1]

Subsequent to the cottage being marked as a defensive point in the event of invasion, by September of 1940 the site of the cottage was designated as part of the runway for a new RAF aerodrome and airstrip. However, due to the intervention of Frazer, the runway was moved slightly. This resulted in the cottage occupying land directly adjacent to the runway and in the direct landing and taking off path of aircraft.
