Julian Orchard (3rd March 1930 – 21st June 1979) played Mr. Upton the Town Clerk in the radio series of Dad's Army.

Biography[]

Early life and career[]

Julian Orchard was born in Wheatley. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and then went onto to study acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

Dad's Army[]

In the radio series of Dad's Army, Julian plays the character of Mr. Upton the Town Clerk, the radio equivalent of the television series' town clerks Mr. Gordon (played by Eric Longworth) and Mr. Rees (Edward Evans).

Other acting work and later career[]

Julian has appeared in four Carry On films.

Final years and death[]

Julian Orchard died in Westminster, London aged just 49.

Trivia[]

  • In the theatre, he and Arthur Lowe played the comedy duo of Stephano and Trinculo to John Gielgud's Prospero.
