Talfryn Thomas (31st October 1922 – 4th November 1982) played Private Cheeseman in the television series of Dad's Army.

Biography[]

Early life and career[]

Talfryn Thomas born in Swansea, Wales. After leaving school, he trained as an instrument mechanic at the local weights and measures office.

Early acting career[]

Talfryn first started acting at a local amateur dramatic society known as the Landore Players, but he held back his professional acting career until he had finished serving in the RAF during WWII. After getting his training at RADA and working in provincal theatre, he started doing more roles for television, radio and film.

Talfryn Thomas as Private Cheeseman in Dad's Army

Talfryn first joined the cast of Dad's Army in the sixth season. His character, a reporter from the Eastbourne Gazette known as Mr. Cheeseman was originally created for a one off episode, but when James Beck died, the character was made into a regular to fill in the spot for Private Walker. However, this position was not to last and the character of Private Cheeseman was dropped from the series after the later five episodes of Season 7, with no explanation given for his departure..

Other acting work and later career[]

Talfryn also featured as Gladys Pugh's half-brother Gareth in one episode of Jimmy Perry and David Croft's other sitcom Hi-de-Hi!

Final years and death[]

Talfryn Thomas died after a heart attack at the age of 60 in 1982.
